LAM versus LLM

Intermediate session

Understand language generation, action selection and why an action-capable system still needs tools, permissions and verification.

Language and action are different tasks

An LLM models language and can generate text or structured tool requests. A large action model is a term used for systems or models focused on selecting and carrying out actions, including interactions with software interfaces.

The terminology is not a standard

LAM does not identify one universal architecture or parameter-size class. Different products use the label differently. An LLM connected to tools can also participate in an action-taking system, so the labels are not mutually exclusive.

Execution needs an application

A proposed action must pass through a runtime that validates arguments, checks permissions and handles errors. Generating a button name or API call does not prove that the action succeeded. Verify the resulting state.

A controlled business example

An assistant might prepare a draft update from approved information. The application can require review before it saves a record, and capture who approved it. Ask what can be read, what can be changed, and how an incorrect action can be recovered.
