The shared foundation
The Internet of Things connects physical devices, measurements and software. A system might collect temperature, location or equipment status and deliver useful information to people or applications.
What makes it industrial
Industrial IoT applies these ideas to environments such as factories, utilities and logistics operations. It often connects operational technology and equipment telemetry with enterprise analytics. Legacy protocols, harsh conditions and constrained connectivity can shape the design.
Why the distinction matters
A missed reading from a convenience device and an incorrect command to industrial equipment can have very different consequences. IIoT design therefore needs particular attention to availability, timing, safety, maintenance and IT/OT security boundaries.
A practical starting point
Begin with read-only monitoring of a selected asset. Establish data quality and ownership before introducing predictions or control. An internet connection alone does not make an industrial process safe to automate.
