An engine, not a model
vLLM is an open-source library and serving engine for model inference. It runs supported models; it is not itself a language model, a training dataset or a business assistant.
Why serving architecture matters
Features such as batching and efficient attention-memory management help manage concurrent inference workloads. The exact benefit depends on the model, hardware, context lengths, request mix and software version. Benchmark claims do not transfer automatically to another environment.
What a deployment still needs
Plan model licences, GPU memory, supported quantisation, capacity, authentication, network access, monitoring and updates. An API-compatible endpoint does not make an internet-facing deployment secure by default.
Do not confuse vLLM and VLM
VLM usually means vision-language model: a model that can process visual and language inputs. vLLM refers to serving software. A supported multimodal model may be served through vLLM, but the terms describe different layers.
