When does CCTV become AI video analytics?

Intermediate session

Follow the path from a camera stream to model inference, reviewable events and operational alerts, including accuracy and privacy limits.

A camera is the input

A conventional CCTV system records or displays video. AI video analytics adds models that analyse frames or sequences to detect patterns, track objects or support search. Analytics can run on a suitable camera, an edge device or a server.

The additional pipeline

Decode the stream, prepare frames, run inference, associate results across time and apply event rules. A video-management or operational application can then show a clip, timestamp and relevant detection for review.

Test the actual scene

Lighting, camera angle, resolution, occlusion and the training domain affect results. Test false alarms and missed events using representative footage. A confidence score is not a guarantee that an event occurred, and a detected object is not automatically an identified person.

Keep use proportionate

Define authorised purposes, access, retention and escalation. A useful alert preserves enough context for an operator to verify it. Recording video alone does not create an AI capability, and adding a model alone does not validate its operational performance.
